Our veterinarians may be able to tell a lot about your pet’s health with a simple physical exam, but there are times when we need to run diagnostic tests to better understand your pet’s condition. How Diagnostic Testing Can Help Your Pet

Diagnostic testing can mean many things. Laboratory tests can tell us a lot about your pet’s health. Of the many standard tests conducted in the lab, complete blood count (or CBC) is among the most common. The CBC examines the number of blood cells in a sample as well as the appearance of these blood cells. Both could indicate signs of infection or help monitor an ongoing disease.

Another blood-related test is the blood chemistry panel. This test is specifically to test organ function, like the function of the liver and kidneys. A blood chemistry panel helps to detect certain enzymes, electrolytes, minerals, and hormone levels. A deviation in the norm for these levels can indicate a problem with certain organs. When used in conjunction with a CBC, the blood chemistry panel can help us know whether your pet is healthy enough to undergo surgery under general anesthesia.

Fecal analyses are another important test that is standard for most wellness visits. Your veterinarian will probably ask you to bring a fresh stool sample to your pet’s wellness exam. Fecal analysis of the stool sample can help detect the presence of parasites such as roundworms, hookworms, and tapeworms.

Like fecal analysis, urinalysis is a standard test that can tell us a lot about your pet’s health. By analyzing your pet’s urine, we’ll be able to detect different kinds of urinary tract diseases, like kidney or bladder diseases, and can even tell us if your pet has diabetes.
